Periodontal Care

Side by side drawings comparing a healthy tooth with another tooth suffering from periodontal diseaseGum disease is on the rise in the United States, and it is more important than ever to keep your gums healthy to prevent teeth and bone loss. Gums are not as well thought about as teeth are when it comes to mouth health, but they are important. We at All Star Dental Care want to protect you from periodontal disease, and here are a few ways to keep your gums clean!

What is Gum Disease

Gum or periodontal disease happens when plaque builds up on your teeth. If you do not keep your mouth healthy, then that plaque can move away from the tooth and towards the gums. If the gums are infected, then you will probably have gingivitis.

Gingivitis can cause your gums to become red and inflamed, and very tender. Spitting blood when you brush or floss your teeth is also a common sign of gingivitis, and if it is not treated early, the bacteria can ruin your gums, jawbone, and can even cause significant damage to other parts of your body.

In the early stages of gum disease, the disease is treatable with proper oral hygiene. However, as the disease gets worse, it becomes more and more difficult to treat and the dentist can only maintain the disease.

How to Treat it

Periodontal disease is treated by good dental hygiene, with good brushing and flossing. Flossing helps to get to the bits of food and plaque that get between your teeth and are not reachable by your toothbrush. As long as you floss once a day after a meal, then you will be all good.

Brushing twice a day after every meal can help keep your teeth clean. Plus, if you scrub your tongue and gums gently, you can further reduce the levels of bacteria in your mouth to help prevent any gum disease. If you have a battery-powered toothbrush, then that can also help get rid of plaque and reduce gum problems.

Finally, using a toothpaste made with fluoride can help during preventative care, along with a good mouthwash. It might seem like a lot, but everything you can do to reduce the bacteria in your mouth will help keep you safe.

Going to the Dentist

Going to the dentist can also be a huge help to combat gum disease. Not only will a dentist tell you if you have gum disease and how far along you are with it, but they will be able to clean your teeth better than you can at home.

We pride ourselves on being able to catch gingivitis and other stages of gum disease and help our patients overcome it. However, if gum disease is not caught early, then we can provide treatments to repair your damaged mouth. This can include surgeries, bone grafting, and dental implants.

It can be scary to find out that you have Periodontal disease but is very easy to treat if you take care of your mouth and catch it early. If you need help with any stage of gingivitis, then please call All Star Dental Care at (808) 808-1606 and we would be happy to set up an appointment!
